Ephemera
The Oxford Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing have archived the ephemera that is part of the organisation's day to day activities, social events and fundraisers. They kept the kinds of items that most organisations would throw away - posters, flyers, letters and newspaper articles - giving a flavour of life at the centre and in the St Ebbe's area.
Some were manually typeset and printed by Halls, a local company who once had premises on nearby Brewer Street. The later posters were re-produced from hand-drawn originals, one of them - for the Food Fair - designed by an ex-student of John Henry Brookes who studied at the Oxford Technical School which later moved to Headington to become the Oxford Polytechnic. The posters themselves give a sense of transitions during the 1970's. The changing technologies in the print are mirrored by an evolving culture.
Kelly's directory is filled with adverts for local businesses, however there are very few adverts for businesses in St Ebbe's, which may suggest that it was too costly for the little businesses in St Ebbe's to advertise there, or that they catered to a more local clientele.
The parish magazines for Trinity Church give a sense of the type and range of businesses in St Ebbe's which served the everyday needs of a resourceful and low paid working class population.
